The Oak­lawn Foun­da­tion pre­sented 40 Gar­land County res­i­dents with $120,000 in schol­ar­ships Tues­day morn­ing for the 2012–13 aca­d­e­mic school year. A pre­sen­ta­tion cer­e­mony was held at The Greater Hot Springs Cham­ber of Com­merce with Dar­rell Meyer, chair­man of the Foun­da­tion, presiding.

For­mer Arkansas Lt. Gov. Bill Hal­ter is con­sid­er­ing a run for the Demo­c­ra­tic guber­na­to­r­ial nom­i­na­tion in 2014 after Con­gress­man Mike Ross opted against a bid.
Hal­ter spokesman Bud Jack­son told The Asso­ci­ated Press that Hal­ter has been flooded with calls urg­ing him to run after Ross announced Mon­day he wouldn’t seek the party’s nom­i­na­tion in 2014.

Department of Veterans Affairs head Retiring

The head of the state’s Depart­ment of Vet­er­ans Affairs is retir­ing after a leg­isla­tive com­mit­tee ques­tioned whether his agency suf­fered from lax over­sight of its finances. Agency direc­tor Dave Fletcher met with Gov. Mike Beebe yes­ter­day and said after­ward he would retire immediately.

Lonoke County Shooting

The Lonoke County Sheriff’s office is con­tin­u­ing its inves­ti­ga­tion into a fatal shoot­ing in Lonoke last week. Offi­cials said Mon­day the 51-year-old vic­tim has shot to death at a res­i­dence about 5:30 p.m. Fri­day. They allege a 71-year-old man shot the vic­tim.
The shoot­ing vic­tim was trans­ported to a hos­pi­tal, where he was pro­nounced dead.

Mike Ross Not Running for Gov

The woman who was awarded a $1 mil­lion prize by a judge in a dis­pute over a win­ning lot­tery ticket has no sym­pa­thy for the woman who orig­i­nally claimed the money — and now says she is unable to pay it all back. “I don’t feel bad for her,’’ Sharon Dun­can told TODAY’s Ann Curry Fri­day. “It’s my money. I deserve the money, not her.’’ In July, Sharon Jones claimed the $1 mil­lion prize after say­ing she found the win­ning ticket in a bin for dis­carded tick­ets in a con­ve­nience store in Beebe.

ASU Logo Licensing Fee

Arkansas State Uni­ver­sity says that peo­ple who gen­er­ate hand­made items that include the Red Wolves logo will have to get a license from the school start­ing July 1.
The uni­ver­sity said Sat­ur­day that the require­ment includes hand-painted goods, cakes and other dec­o­rated foods, win­dow paint­ings and other items.
The school says crafters will need to pay $100 for a license and buy a set of 250 holo­gram stick­ers for $25 in order to legally pro­duce their goods. That license is much less expen­sive than those issued to apparel pro­duc­ers.
The licenses will have to be renewed annually.

ConAgra Layoffs

ConA­gra Foods, Inc. has announced plans to lay off more than 200 employ­ees from its Batesville plant. Accord­ing to a ConA­gra spokesman, the com­pany told employ­ees Thurs­day that it expects to move pro­duc­tion of frozen din­ners to Mar­shall, Mo. Approx­i­mately 250 employ­ees would be affected by the move. The spokesman said the tran­si­tion was nec­es­sary to man­age costs and make oper­a­tions as effi­cient as pos­si­ble.
The lay­offs are expected to take effect in July. “We would love to keep those indi­vid­u­als (in Batesville),” said Mayor Rick Elum­baugh, “and hope­fully we’ll be able to work through this and every­body will keep a pos­i­tive attitude.”

Woman Changes Story

Arkansas author­i­ties say a woman who was allegedly held against her will and tor­tured before escap­ing went with her alleged assailant will­ingly and was not forcibly abducted, as she ini­tially reported. Gar­land County sheriff’s depart­ment spokesman Lt. James Mar­tin said Wednes­day that the woman ini­tially told inves­ti­ga­tors a man abducted her Thurs­day from a friend’s home and held her against her will until she escaped Sat­ur­day. But Mar­tin says she later told inves­ti­ga­tors she went there will­ingly and that the man wouldn’t let her leave on Saturday.

A suc­cess­ful shut­tle bus that has fer­ried rid­ers to Hot Springs Moun­tain Tower and other major tourism spots for free the past two sum­mers may return this year, but on a lim­ited basis. Moun­tain Xpress was a joint pro­gram of the city of Hot Springs, the National Park Ser­vice and the Hot Springs Adver­tis­ing Council.
